The MGA Model: Understood but Underestimated

flexible and cool businessman doing acrobatic trick

Let me share something I think gets lost in how our industry talks about program business. Most insurance professionals I speak with understand what an MGA does. But fewer grasp the most important difference of the model — flexibility — and why that distinction matters when you’re placing transportation risks.

The transportation insurance market has no shortage of expertise. There are carriers and programs that know trucking, last mile, logistics, and moving and storage inside and out. That’s a good thing for the industry. But expertise alone isn’t the whole equation when you’re trying to construct the right solution for a complex account.

Here’s where the MGA model does something different.

At SPG Transportation, our underwriters sit at the intersection of multiple carrier and reinsurer appetites simultaneously. When a risk comes in — an IC fleet, a last mile operation, a moving company with layered exposures — we’re not limited to a single carrier’s box. We can underwrite a customer objectively, rather than through a single lens, understand what it actually needs, and navigate across a flexible platform to build a solution that fits. Different carriers bring different strengths. Our job is knowing how to assemble them in a way that both satisfies the customer’s needs and protects the balance sheets of our carriers.

That flexibility changes the outcome for our customers.

It means coverage that’s constructed around their specific risk profile rather than adapted to fit a predetermined form. It means an underwriter who can lean into the right appetite for each exposure layer rather than forcing the whole account into one framework. It also means that our carrier partners can win with us within a focused appetite. For both customers and insurers, we serve as a long term partner for dynamic risks and appetites — because the platform moves with them.

Expertise matters. But expertise plus flexibility is what produces genuinely tailored solutions.

That’s the MGA model working the way it was designed to.
