Who Actually Built Your Client’s Environmental Policy?

The carrier provides the coverage, but the wholesaler behind the placement determines whether the coverage actually holds up.

Placing environmental coverage with a reputable carrier feels like a win, and usually it is! But when a claim comes in, a renewal surfaces unexpected gaps, or a client’s operations quietly shift. Other questions surface also: who built this policy, and do they actually know environmental risk?

Does it matter which wholesaler places an environmental account?

Yes, significantly. Not every wholesaler approaches the same markets the same way. Preferred relationships unlock better terms, broader manuscript options, and underwriters who are actually accessible. In specialty lines, how you access a market is often as important as which market you access.

A submission that lands on the right underwriter’s desk, framed correctly, from someone they know gets a different response than one that doesn’t. That difference shows up in pricing, in terms, and eventually in claims outcomes.

What does a specialist wholesaler do differently?

A generalist reads the application. A specialist reads the exposure. Those aren’t the same thing.

At SPG Environmental, environmental and pollution liability is the entire business. That means:

  • We know the exposures before the underwriter asks. Waste haulers, remediation contractors, tank testers, demolition crews, environmental consultants — we understand how their operations create risk, not just how they’re classified.
  • We build coverage around the account, not a template. Every environmental exposure has edge cases. We find them before they become claims.
  • We have direct relationships with carriers that compete for specific classes. Knowing which market to use, and how to position the account to get there, is the actual differentiator.
  • We speak claims, not just coverage. Our experience shapes every placement, not just the ones that go sideways.

What can go wrong when a generalist places an environmental account?

Coverage gaps in environmental policies tend to be invisible until a claim forces them into view. A CPL form that doesn’t extend to completed operations. An EIL policy that overlooks a satellite location. A retro date that quietly resets at renewal. By the time someone finds these issues, it’s not a coverage conversation anymore. It’s a claim conversation.

A client can be technically “covered” and still be underinsured. If the policy was built around a generic template rather than their actual operation.

What if an environmental account in my book is already placed?

It may still be worth a second look. If the account was placed through a generalist wholesaler, it may never have had a specialist’s eye on it. A BOR to SPG Environmental costs your client nothing, but it could mean the right carrier, the right underwriter, tighter coverage, and better pricing.

We’ll review it honestly and tell you what we find.

What this means for agents
